The route offers 5 and 7 days of Kilimanjaro climbing.

Marangu known as Coca-Cola route is the least expensive due to its short climbing time enabling hikers getting to the summit one day earlier. It’s the only route which offers sleeping huts in a dormitory style .

Itinerary Description By Day

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870 m) To Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
Distance: 8km / 5 miles

Trekking time: 4-6 hours

Zone: Rainforest

Drive to Marangu gate in Moshi from Arusha for registration formalities. After completing the entrance formalities, start climbing through the natural forest to reach Mandara Hut. Overnight stay at the hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) To Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Distance: 11.5km / 7 miles

Trekking time: 6-8 hours

Zone: Rainforest / Low Alpine Zone

Start hiking at 8:00 through grassy moorland catching a glimpse of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Climb steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heather to reach Horombo Hut. Get a beautiful view of and being above the clouds. Take the rest of the time resting and recuperating for the next day. Hot dinner and sleep at the hut.

Day 3 – Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters)
Distance: 10km / 6 miles

Trekking time: 5-7 hours

Zone: Low alpine zone / High alpine zone

Hike towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain changes to screed and there is a palpable sense of high altitude wilderness. The trail leads to Kibo Hut at the bottom of the crater wall by midday. Take the rest of the day off resting, sleeping and drinking as water as you can. Retire to bed early in preparation for the summit ascent.

Day 4 – Kibo Hut (4,700 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) To Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Distance: 5.5km / 3 miles ascent and then 15km / 8 mile descent

Trekking time: 6-8 hours to the summit , 5-8 hours to Horombo Hut

Zone: Glacial zone, high alpine zone and low alpine zone

Wake up at 23:30 hours to add warm layer of clothes and have cup of hot coffee and biscuits. Start climbing by 00:30 over loose volcanic screen to reach Gilman’s (5,685 m) by sunrise. Enjoy the beautiful sunrise and taking time to rest. Make the final step to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m), the roof of Africa (optional for those interested). At the top get some pictures feeling accomplished and a little rest. Start descending which is quite fast to reach Horombo Hut in late afternoon. Have a hot dinner and a good night sleep at the hut.

Day 5 – Horombo Hut (3,720 m) to Marangu Gate (1,870 m)
Distance: 20km / 12.5 miles

Trekking time: 6-8 hours

Zone: Low alpine zone and rainforest

After breakfast, continue descending through moorland and passing through the beautiful forest. This is the time to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at the gate for certificate awards, green certificates are awarded to hikers who reached Gilman’s and golden to the ones who reached Uhuru peak. Drive back to Arusha for a good bath and much sleep.
