First-time visitors with little time often ask us: if you can only visit one, should it be the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater? They are usually sold together for good reason, but if you really must choose, here is how to decide.
The crater is a closed world about 20 kilometers across with a dense, resident population of lions, elephants, hippos and one of Tanzania's best chances of black rhino. Because the animals stay put, a single day there almost always delivers excellent game viewing. It is also easier to reach, with a full crater day possible from a lodge on the rim.
The Serengeti covers more than 14,000 square kilometers, and what you see depends on where you are and the time of year. If you catch the migration, it offers scenes the crater can't match. At other times it is still famous for big cats, but it needs more days and more driving to enjoy fully.
With three days or fewer, choose the Ngorongoro Crater and add Tarangire or Lake Manyara for variety. With four days or more, do both, usually the crater first and then the Serengeti, which rewards the extra time you give it.
