Best Time to Visit Tanzania for a Safari

No Single Perfect Month

When to visit Tanzania depends on what you want to see more than on one best month. The dry season, roughly June to October, is the most popular. Wildlife gathers near rivers and waterholes, tracks are easier and the migration is at its most dramatic. But it is also the busiest and priciest time, and it is far from the only good option.

June to October: Dry Season and River Crossings

The herds move into the northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River near Kogatende, usually between July and October depending on the rains. Game viewing across the northern parks is at its most dependable, as thinner vegetation and dry riverbeds concentrate the animals.

November to March: Short Rains and the Green Season

Short rains usually fall in November, followed by a warm, green period through March. This is calving season in the southern Serengeti, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born in a few weeks and predators follow closely. Parks are quieter, prices are lower and the scenery is lush, though afternoon showers are common.

April and May: The Long Rains

This is low season. Heavier rain can make some roads difficult and a few camps close. It is also when prices drop the most, and the parks that stay open are wonderfully empty. If you are flexible, this is the most affordable time to go.

Choosing Your Season
