Best Time to Visit Tanzania for a Safari

Published September 17, 2026

There's No Single "Best" Month

The right time to visit Tanzania depends more on what you want to see than on any single "best" month. The dry season (roughly June to October) is the most popular window, and for good reason — wildlife concentrates around rivers and waterholes, tracks are easier to drive, and the wildebeest migration is at its most dramatic. But it's also the busiest and most expensive period, and it isn't the only good time to go.

June to October: Dry Season and Peak Migration

This is when the Serengeti's wildebeest herds push into the Northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River near Kogatende, generally between July and October depending on rains. Game viewing across the northern circuit is at its most reliable during these months, since thinning vegetation and dry riverbeds concentrate animals in predictable places.

November to March: The Short Rains and Green Season

Short rains typically fall in November, followed by a warm, green stretch through March. This is calving season in the southern Serengeti — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks, drawing predators close behind. Parks are quieter, rates are lower, and the landscape is at its most photogenic, though afternoon showers are common.

April and May: The Long Rains

This is Tanzania's low season for a reason — heavier, more sustained rain can make some roads difficult and a handful of camps close entirely. It's also when rates drop the most, and the parks that stay open are noticeably emptier. If flexibility matters more to you than certainty, this is when a Tanzania safari costs the least.

Matching the Season to Your Trip

If following the migration crossings is the priority, aim for July through September on a route like our 10-day Serengeti migration safari. If calving season and fewer crowds matter more, February is hard to beat. Tell us what you want to see and we'll build the itinerary around the season that fits.
