With more than a thousand recorded bird species, Tanzania is a joy for photographers who look beyond the Big Five.
Often called Africa's most photogenic bird, with turquoise, lilac and green feathers. It likes to perch in the open on low branches across the Serengeti and Tarangire, which makes it a dependable subject.
When the conditions are right, lesser and greater flamingos gather along the lakeshore, a sea of pink that looks especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
The Serengeti's grasslands are home to many raptors, from martial eagles to secretary birds. They reward a long lens and plenty of patience.
A telephoto lens of 400mm or more helps with smaller birds. Early morning and late afternoon light is far better than harsh midday sun. Above all, be patient: the best bird photos usually come from waiting quietly, not chasing.
