A Safari Doesn't Have to Be Luxury-Priced

Tanzania safaris can run into five figures per person, but that's not the only option. With the right choices on timing, group size and accommodation, a genuinely good safari is possible on a more modest budget without cutting corners on safety or guiding quality.

Travel in the Green Season

Rates across nearly every camp and lodge drop meaningfully between November and May, outside the peak dry-season months. The trade-off is a chance of afternoon rain and slightly less concentrated wildlife — but calving season (January to March) in particular is a strong wildlife period despite being lower-cost.

Share a Vehicle

Joining a small group safari rather than booking a private vehicle is the single biggest lever on price, since the cost of the vehicle, fuel and guide is split across more people. Our group departures typically run 4-6 travelers — enough to bring the per-person cost down meaningfully without feeling like a large tour bus experience.

Focus Your Route Instead of Covering Everything

Trying to see every major park on one trip adds transfer days and cost without necessarily improving the wildlife viewing. A tighter route — Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, for example, skipping the longer transfer into the Serengeti — can still deliver an excellent safari in six days for less than a longer, more ambitious itinerary.

Where Not to Cut Corners

The guide and vehicle are the two things worth spending on regardless of budget — an experienced driver-guide in a reliable 4x4 with a pop-up roof makes a bigger difference to your actual experience than the thread count on your camp's bedsheets.
