A common misconception is that safaris are only for couples or older travelers. In practice, Tanzania works well for families with kids of most ages, as long as the itinerary is built around them rather than adapted from an adult-focused route at the last minute.
Most camps and lodges set a minimum age for game drives (commonly around 5-6 years old) for safety reasons, so it's worth checking this before booking if you're traveling with younger children. For families, shorter game drives with flexible timing, and a mix of wildlife days with lower-key activities like canoeing or a Maasai village visit, tend to work better than a packed back-to-back drive schedule.
Tarangire and Lake Manyara are generally easier for family days than the Serengeti's longer drive distances, since wildlife is more concentrated and drive times between sightings are shorter. Ngorongoro Crater is also a strong option for families — a single, contained area with a high concentration of animals means less time spent driving and more time actually watching wildlife.
Family-friendly camps often have interconnecting rooms or family tents rather than standard doubles, and these book up faster, so it's worth flagging your family size early. Malaria prophylaxis for children, travel insurance, and vaccination requirements are also worth confirming with your doctor well before you travel, not on arrival.
