First Time on Safari? What to Know Before You Go

Published September 17, 2026

You Won't See Everything, and That's Fine

First-time safari travelers often arrive expecting a guaranteed checklist of sightings. Wildlife viewing is genuinely unpredictable, and a good guide's skill shows more in reading tracks and radio chatter than in ticking off a list. Go in expecting to be surprised rather than expecting a specific outcome, and the trip tends to feel far better.

Pack Light, and Pack in Soft Bags

Small aircraft used for internal transfers often have strict luggage limits, both in weight and bag shape — soft duffel bags that fold into the plane's hold are standard, hard suitcases usually aren't accepted. Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, brown) works better than bright colors or white, which shows dust quickly and can be more visible to animals.

Mornings Start Early

Most game drives start before or around sunrise, when animals are most active and the light is best for photos. It's an early alarm most days of a safari, and worth mentally preparing for rather than being surprised by on day one.

Bring the Right Gear, Not All the Gear

Binoculars matter more than most first-timers expect — a shared pair between two people in the back of a vehicle isn't enough when there's a leopard 200 meters out. Beyond that, a basic camera or phone, sunscreen, a hat, and any personal medication are the essentials; nearly everything else can be sorted with your guide along the way.

Trust Your Guide's Timing

If your guide suggests leaving a sighting or changing route, it's usually because they've picked up on something — a call over the radio, tracks, or animal behavior — that isn't obvious from inside the vehicle. First safaris go best when travelers stay curious and ask questions rather than direct the day themselves. Get in touch if you want a first-timer-friendly itinerary built around a realistic pace.
