Faced with a choice between a 6-day and an 8-day Kilimanjaro itinerary on the same route, many climbers default to the shorter, cheaper option without realizing how much those two extra days actually change the experience.
The additional days on longer itineraries are acclimatization days — time spent gaining altitude slowly, often with a "climb high, sleep low" pattern that gives your body more time to adjust before the final summit push. This is the single biggest lever for improving summit success and reducing altitude sickness symptoms.
On our own Lemosho route, the 6-day itinerary starts from $1,960 and the 8-day version from $2,465 — roughly $250 per additional day. Given what those days do for your acclimatization and overall experience, most climbers who can afford the difference find it a worthwhile trade.
Beyond success rate, the extra days also mean a less exhausting trip overall — more time to actually appreciate the changing landscape across Kilimanjaro's climate zones, rather than rushing through them to make a tight schedule. Climbers on longer itineraries consistently report enjoying the trek itself more, not just summiting more often.
A 6-day itinerary isn't a bad choice for a very fit, experienced high-altitude trekker who acclimatizes well, or for climbers with genuinely limited vacation time.
