One of the most amazing things about Kilimanjaro is not just the summit but the journey to it. In a few days you walk through five completely different climate zones.
The lower slopes are farmed by Chagga families, with maize, coffee and bananas. Most climbs begin here.
Thick, green mountain forest, often misty and humid, home to colobus monkeys and many birds.
The trees give way to open moorland with giant heathers and strange plants such as the giant groundsels (senecios), which look like something from another planet.
A dry, rocky and almost bare landscape. The sun is fierce by day, and nights fall well below freezing.
Ice, rock and snow near the top, with truly arctic conditions, remarkable so close to the equator and a world away from the farms where you started.
You experience five climates in under a week, so layered clothing is more important on Kilimanjaro than on almost any other trek of similar length.
