There Are Several Ways Up, and They're Genuinely Different

Kilimanjaro isn't one single trail — there are several established routes up the mountain, and they differ meaningfully in scenery, crowding, difficulty, and success rate. Picking the right one matters more than most first-time climbers realize.

Lemosho: The Scenic, Higher-Success Choice

Lemosho approaches from the west and is widely considered one of the most scenic routes, crossing through genuine wilderness before joining the summit push. It's less crowded than the busier routes and, taken over 7-8 days, tends to have a higher summit success rate thanks to better acclimatization time. We offer it as 6, 7, and 8-day treks, from $1,960.

Machame: The "Whiskey Route"

Machame is one of the most popular routes on the mountain, known for strong scenery and a demanding, varied trail. It's steeper than Marangu and doesn't use huts, but its popularity means well-established camps and a route acclimatization profile that works well over 6-7 days. Our Machame treks run from $1,985.

Marangu: The Hut Route

Marangu is the only route with sleeping huts instead of tents, and the only one that can be climbed in both directions on the same path. It's often marketed as the "easiest" route, but its shorter standard itinerary (5-6 days) gives less time to acclimatize, which is part of why its summit success rate tends to run lower than longer routes on other sides of the mountain. It's also the most affordable option we offer, from $1,675.

Rongai: The Quieter, Northern Approach

Rongai approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border, and is the driest route with the least foot traffic. It's a good option if you specifically want a quieter climb, and we run it as 5, 6, 7, and 8-day itineraries from $1,760.

Which One Should You Choose?

If summit success is your top priority, choose a longer route (7-8 days) regardless of which one — extra acclimatization time matters more than which specific trail you're on.
