Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater: Which Should You Choose First?

This is one of the most common questions we get from first-time safari travelers with limited time: if you can only do one, Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater? They're often sold as a package, and for good reason — but if your schedule genuinely forces a choice, here's how to think about it.

Ngorongoro Crater: the sure thing

The crater is a closed ecosystem roughly 20km across, with an unusually dense, resident population of wildlife — lion, elephant, hippo, and one of the more reliable spots in Tanzania to see black rhino. Because the animals don't migrate out of it, your odds of a strong game drive on a single day trip are about as good as safari gets. It's also the easier of the two logistically: a full crater visit can be done as a long day trip from an Ngorongoro-area lodge.

Serengeti: the bigger, wilder gamble

The Serengeti is enormous — over 14,000 square kilometers — and what you see depends heavily on where in the park you are and what time of year. If your visit lines up with the wildebeest migration, it delivers scenes the crater simply can't match. Outside migration season, it still offers the classic big-cat sightings the Serengeti is known for, but it takes more days and more driving to get a full sense of it.

Our honest recommendation

With 3 days or fewer: Ngorongoro Crater, paired with Tarangire or Lake Manyara for variety. With 4+ days: both, in the classic Ngorongoro-then-Serengeti order most northern-circuit itineraries already use — the crater's reliability makes a strong opener, and the Serengeti rewards the extra days you give it.
