5-Day vs 7-Day vs 10-Day Tanzania Safari: Which Itinerary Length Is Right for You

The single most common question we get from people planning their first Tanzania trip isn't which park to visit — it's how many days to set aside. Here's a straight answer, based on what each length actually allows.

5 days: the efficient introduction

Enough for a focused northern-circuit trip — typically Tarangire or Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and a shorter stint in the Serengeti. You'll get strong game viewing, including the crater's near-guaranteed sightings, but you're moving on a tighter schedule and won't have slack days for a quiet camp or a weather delay.

7 days: the sweet spot for most travelers

This is what we build most often, and for good reason. Seven days is enough for the full classic circuit — Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and 3–4 nights properly spread across different areas of the Serengeti — without feeling rushed. It's also long enough to time around the wildebeest migration if that's a priority, since you can afford to be in the right part of the Serengeti on the right days rather than wherever the schedule happens to put you.

10+ days: room to add something different

Ten days and up is where a safari stops being just "the northern circuit" and starts becoming a fuller Tanzania trip. That extra time is usually spent one of three ways: adding a quieter southern park like Ruaha or Nyerere for a different landscape and far fewer vehicles, adding a Zanzibar beach extension at the end to properly unwind, or simply slowing the same northern circuit down — fewer transfers per day, more time sitting still and watching.

Our honest advice

If this is your first Tanzania trip and you can only manage one length, go with 7 days. It's the shortest itinerary that doesn't feel compromised, and the most common one we build for exactly that reason.
