Rhino sightings and flamingo-lined shores

Best Time to VisitYear-round, flamingos best seasonally
Getting ThereDrive from Nairobi, or combine with a Maasai Mara safari

Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya is known for rhino sightings and, seasonally, large flocks of flamingos along the lake shore. It's one of the more reliable places in East Africa to see both black and white rhino in the same park, alongside Rothschild's giraffe and a dense population of birdlife around the lake itself.

The park is compact by East African standards, which makes for efficient game drives — most of what Lake Nakuru is known for can be covered without the long transfer distances typical of larger parks. Flamingo numbers vary by season and water level, but the birdlife here is worth visiting for even outside peak flamingo months.

Lake Nakuru is reached by road from Nairobi and works well as an add-on for travelers combining a Kenya safari, typically centered on the Maasai Mara, with time in Tanzania. Get in touch if you'd like to build a cross-border itinerary around it.
