From canvas camps to lodges, what each type really means
Safari accommodation covers a wide range of styles. Here is what the common terms mean.
Canvas rooms built on solid platforms, usually with proper beds and private bathrooms. "Tented" describes the walls, not the standard, and these camps range from mid-range to very luxurious.
These camps move during the year, often following the Great Migration, which is a big advantage if you are timing your trip for the river crossings.
Permanent buildings, usually with more consistent facilities such as steady power and sometimes a pool, across a similar range of comfort levels.
Simpler tents, sometimes with shared bathrooms. It is available on request in most areas, costs less and is basic but comfortable enough.
Where a camp is, and how close it is to the wildlife you want to see, often matters more than its category. Browse our mid-range and luxury options across all our destinations.
