Your practical companion to Tanzania's most celebrated park
For most people, the Serengeti is the picture that comes to mind when they think of an African safari. It covers about 14,750 square kilometers of grassland, acacia country and river forest, and it is the setting for the Great Migration, the biggest movement of land animals anywhere on the planet.
The Serengeti is so big that it feels like several parks in one. The short-grass plains of the south, the rocky kopjes of the center, the woodland of the west and the rivers of the north each have their own character. Where you base yourself decides what kind of safari you have.
The herds move all year, so your travel month shapes what you see. From June to October they are usually in the north, with a chance of Mara River crossings. From December to March they gather in the south for the calving season, when thousands of calves are born and predators follow closely. Both are superb; they are simply different experiences.
Most travelers land at Kilimanjaro or Arusha. From there you can drive in through the Ngorongoro highlands, a beautiful journey in itself, or take a short flight to one of the park's airstrips.
Plan at least two nights so you are not just passing through. Three or more nights give the wildlife and weather time to play their part and let you explore more than one area. After more than 13 years of safaris here, that is the advice we give every guest.
