Two neighboring parks, two very different days out
Most northern safaris include both, since they sit close together. But if you have to choose, here is how they compare.
The Serengeti is enormous, at around 14,750 square kilometers of varied country. The Ngorongoro Crater is compact, about 260 square kilometers enclosed by its rim. That difference shapes everything else.
The crater's walls keep animals close together, so sightings come quickly within a single day. The Serengeti offers space and variety instead, with different landscapes in one park and, at the right time, the Great Migration.
Choose Ngorongoro. It is one of the few places in Tanzania where you have a good chance of seeing black rhino.
One full day is enough for the crater. The Serengeti deserves at least two nights.
If time is short and you want the most animals in one day, pick Ngorongoro. If you want the classic open-plains safari and have more time, pick the Serengeti. If you can, do both, as they are only a short drive apart.
