Tanzania Currency and Money Guide

Cash, cards and currency on your Tanzania trip

Sorting out money is a small part of planning, but it helps to know the basics.

The Local Currency

Tanzania uses the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely accepted for tourism services, including many safari payments.

Bringing US Dollars

Notes should be printed after 2009 and be clean and undamaged. Older or marked notes are often refused, which surprises many first-time visitors.

Cards and ATMs

You will find them in bigger towns such as Arusha and Moshi, but don't rely on them in or near the parks.

What You Need Cash For

Tips, souvenirs, drinks not included in your package and small extras along the way.

Our Advice

Bring more US cash than you expect to need, in small, clean notes, and treat cards as a backup once you are on safari.
