Neighbors that share the migration but offer different safaris
Tanzania and Kenya share a border and the same Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, and both offer excellent safaris. Choosing between them, or visiting both, depends on practical differences rather than one being simply better.
Tanzania's parks are generally larger, so you usually share sightings with fewer vehicles. Kenya's Masai Mara is smaller and can feel busy in migration season, though its facilities are often well developed.
Because it is one ecosystem, timing matters more than the country. The herds are usually in the Mara from about July to October and in Tanzania's Serengeti for the rest of the year, including the calving season in the south from December to March.
Tanzania's northern parks are linked by roads only a few hours apart. Kenya's parks are more spread out and sometimes need flights between them.
A combined trip is quite common. It needs separate visas and a proper border crossing, so we plan it into the route from the start.
