Where to See Lions on a Tanzania Safari

A real, practical guide

Lions are one of the more reliable Big Five sightings in Tanzania, and two places in particular stand out: the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater both hold dense, well-studied lion populations that turn up on most game drives without requiring much luck. Part of what makes lions easier to find than leopards or cheetahs comes down to their social structure. Prides are territorial, and because guides track recent sightings closely, there's usually a reasonably good idea of roughly where a pride has been active in the days before your visit — this isn't guesswork so much as accumulated local knowledge. If you're looking beyond the Northern Circuit, Ruaha National Park holds one of Tanzania's healthiest lion populations outside the classic parks, with considerably fewer vehicles competing for the same sighting. Browse our safari itineraries, or see our guide to the Serengeti's big cats for more on how lions, leopards and cheetahs each use different terrain.
