Overview

Materuni village sits on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, where mountain streams feed a waterfall that plunges about 90 metres into a chilly, refreshing pool at the end of the walk.

The village is also a coffee-growing community, and you join a local Chagga family to see how they grow, roast and grind coffee by hand, then taste the result. It is fun even if you are not a big coffee drinker.

Day 1

MATERUNI WATERFALL AND COFFEE TOUR

Materuni is a traditional Chagga village about 15 km from Moshi, the last settlement before Kilimanjaro National Park. Our English-speaking guide collects you in Moshi in the morning and drives you to the village, where you register at the village office. You then walk about 40 minutes to the waterfall, learning about Chagga culture, village life and local plants on the way. The views are superb, and on a clear day you may see Kilimanjaro's summit. After the falls you join a local family to roast and grind coffee by hand and taste it fresh before returning to Moshi.
