Overview

Burigi-Chato became a national park in 2022, joining three former game reserves into one 4,707 sq km protected area. It is Tanzania's fifth-largest park and still sees very few visitors compared with the northern circuit.

This three-day camping trip from Mwanza explores the park's savannah, woodland and wetlands, home to elephant, buffalo, roan antelope and many birds. Camping keeps the cost low while giving you a real wilderness feel.

Day by Day (3 days)

Day 1

MWANZA TO BURIGI-CHATO NATIONAL PARK

You leave Mwanza at 7 am with lunch boxes and drive about 258 km on tarmac to Biharamulo (4-5 hours). After lunch you continue to Nyungwe Gate and on to Nkome public campsite, about 338 km from Mwanza in total.
Overnight at Nkome Public Campsite with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 2

FULL DAY EXPLORING BURIGI-CHATO

A full day of game drives through the park, close to the shores of Lake Victoria. The Kagera River runs along the park's edge towards Rwanda and makes a beautiful backdrop. Wildlife here includes elephant, buffalo, antelope, lion, leopard, zebra and giraffe.
Overnight at Nkome Public Campsite with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 3

RETURN TO MWANZA

After breakfast you drive back to Mwanza for your flight home, or continue to Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar to extend your holiday.
