Where in Tanzania to find lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino
The Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, were originally the animals hunters considered most dangerous to track on foot. Today the term simply stands for a great safari. Remember, though, that wild animals can never be guaranteed.
Lion: Found across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and one of the easier five to see.
Elephant: Tarangire is the standout, with some of Tanzania's largest herds.
Buffalo: Common in most parks and usually the easiest to find.
Leopard: The most secretive, solitary and often hidden in trees. The Serengeti's kopjes and rivers give a good chance.
Rhino: The rarest by far. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few dependable places in Tanzania to see black rhino.
More days across more than one park greatly improves your odds of seeing all five. Time and variety are the only real secrets.
