A new national park with the wilderness to yourself
Burigi-Chato became a national park in 2019, created from former game reserves close to Lake Victoria in northwest Tanzania. It covers about 4,707 square kilometers, making it one of the largest parks in the country, and it is still well off the usual tourist trail.
Freshwater lakes, papyrus swamps and rolling savanna make up the landscape. Wildlife numbers are still recovering from the years before it gained full park protection.
This is a park for travelers who want real solitude away from the busy northern routes. It is not the place for guaranteed Big Five sightings, but you may have whole valleys to yourself.
The park is reached from Mwanza on Lake Victoria, a very different starting point from the usual Arusha-based safari.
June to October, the dry season, offers the easiest roads and the best game viewing.
