Great Migration River Crossings: A Complete Guide
A Complete Guide
The Great Migration includes two genuinely distinct river crossings, and knowing the difference matters if you're planning a trip specifically to see one. The Grumeti River crossings in the western corridor typically happen in June and July, generally with fewer vehicles and less competition for a good vantage point.
The Mara River crossings further north are the more famous of the two, usually peaking in August and September as the herds push toward Kenya's Maasai Mara. These crossings tend to be more dramatic and are considerably busier, since this is the crossing most documentaries and photographs are built around.
Neither crossing happens on a fixed date. Timing shifts from year to year based on rainfall, and no single day is ever guaranteed — flexible travel dates genuinely improve your odds of witnessing one, since we can adjust your itinerary around where the herds actually are rather than a calendar guess made months in advance.
