Grumeti River Crossings Explained

A real, practical guide

🕑 1 min read By the Abakombe team
The Grumeti River crossings happen earlier in the migration's annual cycle than the more famous Mara crossings — typically June and July, as the herds move through the Serengeti's western corridor on their way north. What makes the Grumeti genuinely worth knowing about is the contrast with the Mara: vehicle traffic here is considerably lighter, since far fewer operators build their itineraries specifically around this earlier stage of the migration. You get a comparable river-crossing spectacle with meaningfully fewer other vehicles competing for the same view. The crossings themselves share the same tension and drama as anywhere else on the migration route, helped along by the fact that some of the largest Nile crocodiles in the entire ecosystem are found along the Grumeti specifically — long-established, and exactly where they know a crossing is likely to happen. See how the Mara River crossings compare, or browse our safari itineraries to plan around the Grumeti's June-July window.
