Gorillas in the Land of a Thousand Hills
Rwanda is known as one of Africa's best-organized and most beautiful countries, and its nickname, the "Land of a Thousand Hills", comes from its green, terraced slopes. Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, is the main reason most travelers come.
Gorilla permits cost more in Rwanda than in Uganda, but the park is close to Kigali and treks are often shorter. It is a choice between price and convenience rather than a matter of one being better.
The capital is clean, safe and easy to get around, and most trips begin and end there with time to explore.
June to September and December to February, the dry seasons, offer the best trekking conditions.
Fly into Kigali International Airport. Like Uganda, Rwanda usually works best as its own part of a trip rather than a quick add-on to Tanzania.
