Overview
Marangu is Kilimanjaro's oldest route and the only one where you sleep in huts instead of tents. This six-day version adds an extra day to the standard climb, which gives your body more time to adjust before summit night.
The path is well made and climbs at a steady, moderate angle, and the final push to the crater rim is the only truly hard section. The huts are simple and shared, but a bunk and solid walls each night appeal to climbers who would rather skip camping.
You spend the extra day at Horombo Hut, either resting or taking an acclimatization walk towards Mawenzi, the mountain's jagged second peak. Either way, it improves your chances compared with the five-day climb.
