Overview
Machame earns its nickname, the "Whiskey" route, because it is tougher and more rewarding than the hut route. Over six days you climb from the southern forest onto open ridges, cross beneath the Western Breach and scramble up the Barranco Wall, with the view changing almost every hour.
Expect longer, steeper walking days than on Marangu, but a slightly shorter summit night. You sleep in tents the whole way. We supply good mountain tents and mattresses, though a warm sleeping bag of your own will help you rest properly at the higher camps.
No technical climbing is involved, but you should be reasonably fit, and some hiking experience helps. After the summit you come down the Mweka trail, spend the last night at Mweka or Millennium camp and return to Arusha the next day.
