Day by Day (5 days)
ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA
You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and are met by your driver-guide, who takes you on the 45-minute drive to your hotel in Arusha, at the foot of Mount Meru. After check-in your guide gives a full briefing on the route, the park rules, the vehicle and what to expect each day, and you can ask any questions about your safari. The rest of the day is free to rest after your flight, or to walk to the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre and the local markets. Early to bed is wise, since the game drives start at dawn. You stay at a clean, simple tented camp or guesthouse with shared facilities, hot meals and a comfortable bed after a full day in the field.
MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK GAME DRIVES
Mikumi National Park is the closest park to Dar es Salaam, about 4 hours by road, and is crossed by the main highway, so it is easy to reach. The Mkata floodplain is the heart of the park and resembles a small Serengeti, with open grassland, scattered acacias and distant mountains. Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, impalas and elephants are common, lions are often seen on the plains and hippos live in the pools in the north. The birdlife is excellent, including bee-eaters, rollers and fish eagles. The park is a good short safari from Dar es Salaam and is often combined with Nyerere or Udzungwa Mountains National Park on a southern circuit trip. You stay at a clean, simple tented camp or guesthouse with shared facilities, hot meals and a comfortable bed after a full day in the field.
NYERERE NATIONAL PARK BOAT SAFARI AND GAME DRIVES
Nyerere National Park, formerly the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, is the largest national park in Tanzania, at about 30,000 square kilometres, and is centred on the Rufiji River and its lakes. The park offers game drives, boat safaris and walking safaris in the same stay, which makes it very different from the northern circuit. A boat safari takes you close to hippos, crocodiles and large flocks of water birds, with elephants and buffalo coming to drink along the banks. The park is also one of the best places in Africa to see African wild dogs, as well as lions, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra and sable antelope. Walking safaris with an armed ranger give a different view of the bush, with tracks, plants and insects as well as larger animals. The park is much quieter than the north, with few vehicles on the tracks. You stay at a clean, simple tented camp or guesthouse with shared facilities, hot meals and a comfortable bed after a full day in the field.
NYERERE NATIONAL PARK BOAT SAFARI AND GAME DRIVES
For a further day in the area, you explore a different part of the park with your guide. You stay at a clean, simple tented camp or guesthouse with shared facilities, hot meals and a comfortable bed after a full day in the field.
DEPARTURE FROM TANZANIA
After breakfast you check out and your driver-guide takes you to the airport for your flight home, or to your next destination. Allow plenty of time for the transfer and for check-in, and your guide will help with your luggage and any last-minute shopping for souvenirs. We hope you leave with wonderful memories of your safari and look forward to welcoming you back soon. Please let us know if you would like to add a beach stay, a Kilimanjaro climb or a cultural experience to your next trip.
