Waterfalls and fresh coffee on Kilimanjaro's green foothills
Materuni is a Chagga village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. It is best known for its waterfall, around 90 meters high, which you reach on a short guided walk through banana groves, farms and forest.
Most visits include time at a family coffee farm. Your Chagga hosts, whose people have farmed Kilimanjaro's slopes for generations, show you how the beans are picked, roasted, ground and brewed by hand, and then you taste the result.
Materuni makes a good outing the day before or after a Kilimanjaro trek. It is active enough to be fun but gentle enough not to tire you before the climb or strain tired legs afterwards.
All year. The falls are at their most powerful just after the rainy seasons.
It is around 45 minutes by road from Moshi, the main base for Kilimanjaro climbers.
