Safari Photography Gear Guide

The kit that really matters, without overspending

You don't need professional equipment to take great safari photos. Here is what really helps and what you can skip.

The Lens Matters Most

A telephoto zoom of around 100-400mm covers most wildlife situations. It makes more difference than the newest camera body.

Keep It Steady

A beanbag resting on the window frame gives much sharper pictures than holding the camera by hand. It is cheap and very effective.

Storage and Power

Bring more memory cards than you think you need, plus a power bank, as charging varies from camp to camp.

Phones Work Too

Modern phones take lovely landscape shots, though distant animals are harder without a real zoom lens. They are fine if you don't want to carry a camera.

Nice but Not Necessary

A second camera body, ultra-wide lenses and special filters are fun for enthusiasts, but you don't need them for a great set of safari photos.
