Elephant country among the ancient baobabs
Tarangire is known above all for its elephants, with some of the largest herds in Tanzania, and for the giant baobab trees, many centuries old, that give it a look unlike any other northern park.
The Tarangire River is one of the few rivers in the region that never runs dry. From about June to October, animals come from far and wide to drink, and elephant herds of several hundred are common. In the wetter months the wildlife spreads out and sightings are harder to predict.
Tarangire covers around 2,850 square kilometers and gets far fewer visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. That makes it a great choice for short trips and for travelers who prefer a quieter safari.
It is roughly a two-hour drive from Arusha, which makes it an easy first or final stop on a northern safari.
One night with a full day of game drives gives you a good feel for the park. With two nights you can explore more of it.
