Tanzania vs Kenya Safari: Which Should You Choose?

Published September 17, 2026

Two Neighbors, One Ecosystem

Tanzania and Kenya share a border, an ecosystem and much of the same wildlife, so choosing between them is more about logistics and priorities than one being better.

Variety in One Trip

In Tanzania you can combine the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara on one road trip without much backtracking, and then fly to Zanzibar. Kenya's Maasai Mara is superb but more standalone. Adding other parks such as Lake Nakuru usually means longer drives.

Facilities and Crowds

Kenya's safari facilities and flight network are often more developed, which can help on short trips. Tanzania's parks, especially the remote corners of the Serengeti, usually feel less crowded, thanks to their size and more limited road access.

Cost

Park fees differ enough that daily costs depend on the parks and season you choose. Neither country is always cheaper. Your choice of camps and group size makes the bigger difference.

Can You Do Both?

Yes. A cross-border trip combining the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem with Lake Nakuru is possible, with a border crossing or a flight between countries. Tell us what matters most to you, whether variety, budget or trip length, and we will recommend the country or combination that fits.
