Overview
Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and a fine climb in its own right. It is shorter and much quieter than Kilimanjaro, with a trail that climbs through the forest and moorland of Arusha National Park before a steep final section to Socialist Peak.
The climb itself takes four days: two nights going up, a pre-dawn summit push to 4,566m on day three, then the walk down. With arrival and departure nights in Arusha, the whole trip is six days. On the lower slopes you often pass giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys before the path climbs into bare volcanic terrain.
Many people climb Meru to acclimatize before Kilimanjaro. It gives you real high-altitude experience on a smaller, less demanding mountain.
