Meeting mountain gorillas, and pairing Uganda with Tanzania
About half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas live in Uganda, mostly in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the southwest.
With rangers and trackers, you hike through thick, steep forest to find your assigned gorilla family. It can take less than an hour or most of the day, depending on where the gorillas moved overnight. Once you find them, you have one unforgettable hour in their company. Be ready for muddy, uneven trails.
Every trekker needs a permit, and only a few are issued per gorilla family each day, which keeps the encounters calm and uncrowded. Booking well ahead is essential.
June to August and December to February are the driest months for trekking. Treks run all year, but the trails are wetter and harder outside those periods.
Because of the flights and travel time involved, Uganda works best as its own part of your journey, usually before or after a Tanzania safari.
