Where To Go In Zanzibar

Zanzibar's main areas each have a different character.

Stone Town is the historic heart of the island — narrow alleyways, markets, carved doors and centuries of layered history, usually visited for a day or two rather than used as a beach base.

Nungwi and Kendwa, on the north coast, are popular for calm, reliably swimmable beaches with less dramatic tidal swings than the east coast.

Paje, Jambiani and the southeast coast are known for strong kite-surfing conditions and a more laid-back, less built-up feel than the north.

Matemwe, on the northeast coast, offers quieter beaches and is a good base for snorkeling trips out to Mnemba Atoll.
