Travel insurance for Kilimanjaro needs to specifically cover high-altitude trekking — many standard travel policies exclude activities above a certain altitude, often 3,000–4,000m, which would leave you uncovered for exactly the part of the trip where something is most likely to go wrong (see our altitude sickness guide for why that matters).
When choosing a policy, check that it explicitly covers trekking up to at least 6,000m (Kilimanjaro's summit is 5,895m), emergency medical evacuation including helicopter rescue if needed, and trip cancellation and interruption.
We require all Abakombe climbers to carry appropriate travel insurance before joining a climb — it's a standard, sensible precaution, not a formality. Contact us if you'd like recommendations for providers that reliably cover Kilimanjaro-altitude trekking, or see our full Kilimanjaro safety guide for how we manage risk on the mountain more broadly.
