Kenya Safari Overview

Kenya is best known for the Masai Mara — the northern extension of the same ecosystem as Tanzania's Serengeti, and prime territory for the Great Migration when it crosses the Mara River, typically between July and October (see our migration calendar for the detail). Beyond the Mara, Kenya offers Amboseli — famous for elephant herds photographed against Kilimanjaro's silhouette across the border — plus Lake Nakuru and the drier northern reserves around Samburu.

Because the Mara and the Serengeti are one continuous ecosystem split by a national border, many travelers combine both countries into a single itinerary to follow the migration wherever it happens to be, rather than gambling on one side of the border alone.
