Guides And Porters

Every Abakombe Kilimanjaro climb is led by a licensed, experienced mountain guide, supported by a full crew of porters and a cook. The guide leads the pace, monitors your health daily (see our safety guide for what that involves), and makes the final call on summit attempts and any need to descend early. Porters carry the group's camping equipment, food and communal gear — climbers only carry a daypack with their own personal items.

Tanzania's national park regulations set maximum weight limits for porters — currently 20kg of load, weighed at gate checkpoints — specifically to protect porter welfare, and we hold our crews to fair wage and treatment standards well beyond the bare legal minimum.
