You don't need to be an elite athlete to climb Kilimanjaro, but general fitness genuinely helps — both for enjoying the climb and for coping better with the physical strain of altitude.
Cardiovascular fitness: Regular walking, hiking, running or cycling in the months before your climb builds the base endurance you'll draw on over multiple long days.
Leg strength: Stair climbing, hill walking, or a stair machine — Kilimanjaro involves many hours of steady uphill (and, on summit day, a very long downhill) walking.
Practice hikes: If possible, do several long day-hikes of four or more hours with a loaded daypack in the weeks before your trip, to get used to sustained walking in real hiking boots.
Mental preparation matters as much as physical fitness: the climb is as much about pacing yourself and staying patient — "pole pole", slowly slowly, as the guides say — as it is raw fitness.
