Kenya Migration Calendar

The Great Migration is a continuous, year-round movement of roughly two million wildebeest and zebra across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem — not a single event on a fixed date, but there are broad, well-documented patterns worth planning a trip around.

December–March: Herds are concentrated in the southern Serengeti and around Ngorongoro, in Tanzania — this is calving season, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few short weeks.

April–June: Herds move north and west through the central and western Serengeti, following the rains.

July–October: Herds typically reach the northern Serengeti and cross into Kenya's Masai Mara — this is when the famous, dramatic river crossings usually happen, and the single most popular window to visit for this reason.

November: Herds begin moving back south into the Serengeti, closing the annual cycle.
