Elephant Safaris in Tanzania: Where to Go

If elephants are a priority for your safari, Tarangire National Park is the clearest answer. It's known for some of the largest elephant herds anywhere in Tanzania, particularly during the dry season, when the Tarangire River becomes one of the only reliable water sources for miles and draws enormous numbers of elephants to its banks. Ruaha National Park holds significant elephant populations too, with the added benefit of far fewer vehicles per sighting than the busier Northern Circuit parks — a genuine trade worth considering if crowd-free viewing matters as much to you as the sighting itself. Timing follows the same dry-season logic in both parks: as water becomes scarcer, elephants concentrate more predictably near rivers and waterholes, which meaningfully improves your odds of a large-herd sighting rather than a scattered handful of individuals.
