The Big Five: A Serengeti Guide

The "Big Five" — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — is a term with an interesting, slightly uncomfortable origin: it comes from big-game hunting, referring to the five animals considered most dangerous to track on foot. Today it's used purely as a wildlife-viewing benchmark, but the name's history is worth knowing. Of the five, rhino sightings are the genuine outlier in terms of difficulty. They're rare in the Serengeti itself, and if seeing a rhino specifically matters to your trip, the Ngorongoro Crater offers a far higher realistic chance, since it holds one of Tanzania's few accessible black rhino populations. Leopard sightings, while never guaranteed, improve significantly with a guide who knows specific riverine tree territories — this is one of those cases where local, accumulated knowledge genuinely changes your odds more than luck alone.
