Best Lodges for Stargazing in Tanzania
Best Lodges for Stargazing in Tanzania
What to look for, and how to choose the right property for your trip
Tanzania's remoteness away from major cities makes for genuinely excellent night skies in the right locations, and a few areas stand out specifically for stargazing. Properties in the Ngorongoro Highlands and the southern Serengeti plains benefit from minimal light pollution, giving a clarity to the night sky that's hard to find almost anywhere outside rural Africa.
The dry season generally offers clearer skies than the rainy months, since cloud cover during the long and short rains can obscure what would otherwise be an excellent night for viewing — worth factoring in if stargazing is a genuine priority rather than an incidental bonus to your trip.
Some camps go a step further and offer telescopes or guided stargazing sessions as part of their evening program, turning what's already a naturally dark, clear sky into a properly guided experience with context about what you're actually looking at.
