First-Time Safari Guide: What to Expect
First-Time Safari Guide: What to Expect
A real, practical guide from Abakombe Tours and Safaris
A typical safari day runs on a rhythm built around when wildlife is actually active: game drives happen early morning and late afternoon, deliberately avoiding the harshest midday heat and light, when much of the wildlife is resting anyway.
The vehicles themselves are open-sided 4x4s with pop-up roofs, giving you a genuinely unobstructed view for both general viewing and photography — you're not looking out a small window, but standing up through an open roof for most sightings.
Perhaps the most important thing a good operator does that first-time travelers don't always expect: building in real rest time between activities. A safari isn't a checklist to complete as fast as possible, and pacing genuinely improves the experience — trying to cram in the maximum number of activities every single day tends to leave people exhausted rather than satisfied.
