Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes Explained

A real, practical guide from Abakombe Tours and Safaris

Kilimanjaro has several established routes, and each has a genuinely different character worth understanding before you choose. The Machame route is the most popular, largely for its scenery, and is typically climbed over 6 to 7 days — long enough for solid acclimatization without an especially long trip. The Marangu route stands apart as the only one using hut accommodation instead of tents, which appeals to some climbers for comfort reasons — though it's worth knowing this route also carries a lower summit success rate, generally attributed to its shorter standard duration and less gradual acclimatization profile. The Lemosho route offers the longest, most gradual ascent of the main options, which generally translates into better acclimatization and a correspondingly higher summit success rate — often our default recommendation when success rate matters more than trip length. See our full guide to route length and success rates, or browse our Kilimanjaro packages by route.
