Ndutu Calving Season Explained

Ndutu sits just south of the Serengeti's official boundary, technically within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area rather than the park itself — a detail most travelers don't realize until they're planning a trip around it specifically. For a few weeks each year, this unassuming stretch of plains becomes one of the most concentrated wildlife events anywhere in Africa. Calving season means exactly what it sounds like: wildebeest give birth here in enormous numbers, and predator density follows accordingly, since newborn calves are especially vulnerable in their first days and weeks. Lion, cheetah and jackal all know precisely what this season means, and the resulting predator action is a big part of why Ndutu draws serious wildlife photographers specifically for this window.
