Night Wildlife in Tanzania: What You Can See
What You Can See
Most safari planning revolves around daytime game drives, but a genuinely different set of wildlife comes out after dark — and a handful of places in Tanzania let you see it properly. Night game drives are permitted in select areas, including Ngorongoro's highlands and some private concessions, and they reveal species you'll rarely encounter during a standard day drive.
Genets, aardvarks, porcupines and spotted hyenas are all considerably more commonly seen after dark than during daylight hours, when many of them are resting or hidden. It's a genuinely different rhythm to a safari — slower, quieter, with a spotlight replacing the usual reliance on daylight visibility.
The one thing worth planning ahead for: not every park permits night drives, so this isn't something you can simply decide to add once you're already in Tanzania. If a night drive interests you, it needs to be built into your itinerary from the start.
