Serengeti Migration Crossing Points Explained
A real, practical guide
It's easy to think of "the migration crossing" as a single event, but there are genuinely two distinct crossing points, in two different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem, active at different times of year. Knowing which one you're actually planning around matters for how you time your trip.
The Grumeti River crossings happen in the western corridor, typically June through July, with noticeably lighter vehicle traffic than the more famous alternative. The Mara River crossings happen much further north, typically August through September, and are the single most-filmed, most photographed event of the entire migration.
The key thing to understand is that no crossing point is active year-round — each has its own specific window, and timing your visit to the right point matters considerably more than simply booking "a Serengeti safari" and hoping a crossing happens to be nearby.
