Overview
This 3-day itinerary departs from Dar es Salaam for Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park), including a boat ride along the Rufiji River where crocodiles, hippos and a wide range of other wildlife gather along the water's edge.
Nyerere is one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa, and its boat safaris offer a genuinely different vantage point from the vehicle-based game drives most Tanzania safaris rely on. Flying safaris from Zanzibar can also be arranged, alongside road packages departing from Arusha in northern Tanzania.

Day by Day (3 days)
Leave Dar es Salaam early morning and drive to Selous Game Reserve — quite a distance, arriving by mid-day. After lunch, a boat ride on the Rufiji River, where crocodiles and hippos converge to drink and, if you're lucky, hunt. Overnight at Selous Mapumziko Lodge, perched on the riverbank.
A full day of game drives across Selous in search of elephant, zebra, gazelle, impala and the rare African wild dog. Named after explorer Frederick Selous and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the reserve is roughly the size of Switzerland, with terrain ranging from savannah grassland to rocky outcrops cut by the Rufiji River. Boat trips, walking safaris and 4x4 game drives are all available here. Overnight at Selous Mapumziko Lodge. All meals included.
An early morning game drive or nature walk, then breakfast before the drive back to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the afternoon. If flying on to Zanzibar instead, transfer to the airstrip for your flight. This safari can also be arranged as camping at public campsites just outside the reserve, or flown in directly from Zanzibar or Arusha.
